Computer manufacturers are working hard on their answer to the iPad with models in various sizes and designs expected in the coming months.
Microsoft is leading the charge by working with numerous partners to develop small tablet computers running Windows 7. CEO Steve Ballmer has named Asus, Dell, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo by name, among others. This isn't Microsoft's first try in the tablet computer ring, either. The company's first models back in 2001 were primarily oriented toward business customers.
"It depends entirely on what you want to do with it," says Florian Muessig from German computer magazine c't when asked about the choice between a tablet computer and a netbook. The iPad is better for many computer games than a mini-laptop. Electronic books (eBooks) are also better suited for the tablet computer. The biggest advantage cited by the hardware expert is the fast bootup: 'You press the button and it's on.'
Netbooks have moved on in recent years beyond their original, limited intended purpose. At prices below $200 -- and thus significantly cheaper than an iPad (starting at $500) -- a netbook offers almost everything a modern PC can do, except with less processing power and lower resolution screens. The next generation will be coming with new double core Atom series processors from Intel. "But I'm not counting on seeing them this year," Muessig says.
With a battery life of up to ten hours, the iPad is built for the long haul, or long plane ride. Netbook batteries have typically maxed out at seven hours. Some of the new models are promising up to ten hours or more, though, and "for netbooks in particular battery life is a crucial factor," says Samsung manager Dirk Neuneier.
There are significant differences in the available storage memory. While netbooks usually have hard drives capable of holding 160 or 250 GB, the iPad holds only 16 to 64 GB. There's only one way to store more data than that: the internet. After all, the iPad has no USB port to insert external storage media. The tablet computers from other manufacturers hope to seize that niche.
"An iPad is used to communicate information quickly," explains Product Manager Joerg Wissing from netbook Pionier Asus. "If you want to work creatively, then a netbook is certainly a better choice."
The Taiwanese hardware maker wants to produce devices in both categories and is preparing tablet computers of various sizes. "We're in the development phase and are keeping our eyes and ears open about what users need," Wissing says. "The fast on and off is certainly a topic. A USB is planned, but the decision on the operating system is still open."
Software is getting more and more important. The iPad was a success not least because of its mobile operating system, now known as iOs, which harmonises perfectly with the hardware. Netbooks typically run on Windows.

computer application: Portraying the shortage of right talent for companies to hire, a latest study said just 18 per cent of the fresh technical graduates surveyed possessed right skills to be eligible for jobs in IT services companies.
As per the study of over 40,000 technical graduates by assessment technology company Aspiring Minds, a majority of fresh engineering graduates require additional training to be eligible for any job in the IT/ITeS sector.
The employability study was based on results of a computer-based test called AMCAT conducted for engineering and Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) students (in final year) across 12 states in the country.
"Employability with regard to IT services companies is 17.84 per cent," the study found.
Employability refers to skills like English communication, quantitative skills, problem-solving skills and computer science and programming skills, which fresh graduates must possess to get employed by firms.
Employability of these graduates with regard to IT product companies is as low as 4.22 per cent, the study said.
Further, Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPOs) firms find only 9.47 per cent technical graduates employable.
For BPOs and Technical Support jobs the employability is 38.23 per cent and 25.88 per cent, respectively.
The employability figures are based on actual hiring benchmarks on AMCAT scores set by multiple companies in IT/ITeS related sectors.
The report also revealed employability of MCA students is almost half of that of engineering students in case IT services companies and KPOs.
However, MCA candidates have excellent potential for becoming employable at IT product companies, given their good computer programming skills, the study stated.

A network server is a computer designed
Definition: A network server is a computer designed to process requests and deliver data to other (client) computers over a local network or the Internet.
Network servers typically are configured with additional processing, memory and storage capacity to handle the load of servicing clients. Common types of network servers include:
* Web servers
* proxy servers
* FTP servers
* online game servers
Numerous systems use this client / server networking model including Web sites and email services. An alternative model, peer-to-peer networking enables all computers to act as either a server or client as needed.
3. BANGALORE: Indrani Medhi, a software engineer, has designed a software that permits illiterate people to access a computer easily.
Medhi said that a huge section of society remains cut-off from using computers because they have low literacy, even as computing plays a larger role in everyday life.
To make computers more accessible to such section, Medhi designed four applications - job search, mobile money transfer, health information and a map, out of which job search and the money transfer applications, are fully functional.
"Text-free interfaces are designed guidelines for computer-human interfaces for low literate people such that on first interaction with the PC (Personal Computer) or a mobile phone, they are able to realise useful interactions with minimal or no assistance," said Medhi.
The job search function uses symbols to denote the kind of jobs less literate persons would look for. There is also the availability of voice-based information. The entire application is text free so even completely illiterate persons can use it with minimal or no assistance to find jobs and medical help.
"There are designed principles such as graphics, hand-drawn-style graphics, voice annotation in the local language, help feature, a video which gives you the broader context of the application. A lot of mouse-over functions as it is, so we have done away with text. There's absolutely no text but there is use of numbers because low literate users are able to read Indo-Arabic numerals," added Medhi.

Topology in Network Design
Topology in Network Design
Think of a topology as a network's virtual shape or structure. This shape does not necessarily correspond to the actual physical layout of the devices on the network. For example, the computers on a home LAN may be arranged in a circle in a family room, but it would be highly unlikely to find a ring topology there.
Network topologies are categorized into the following basic types:
* bus
* ring
* star
* tree
* mesh
More complex networks can be built as hybrids of two or more of the above basic topologies.
Bus Topology
Bus networks (not to be confused with the system bus of a computer) use a common backbone to connect all devices. A single cable, the backbone functions as a shared communication medium that devices attach or tap into with an interface connector. A device wanting to communicate with another device on the network sends a broadcast message onto the wire that all other devices see, but only the intended recipient actually accepts and processes the message.
Ethernet bus topologies are relatively easy to install and don't require much cabling compared to the alternatives. 10Base-2 ("ThinNet") and 10Base-5 ("ThickNet") both were popular Ethernet cabling options many years ago for bus topologies. However, bus networks work best with a limited number of devices. If more than a few dozen computers are added to a network bus, performance problems will likely result. In addition, if the backbone cable fails, the entire network effectively becomes unusable.

How to Setup your Screen Saver
How to Setup your Screen Saver
This article will explain how to set up your screen saver with password protection for Windows 2000 and XP systems.
Do the following:
- Right click on a open area on your desktop.
- A grey dialog box will appear.
- At the bottom of the dialog box is a selection called "Properties". Select "Properties".
- The below dialog box will appear:
- Click on the screen saver tab and the dialog box will look similar to:
- Select the drop down box below the word "Screen Saver" which is below the picture of the monitor.
- Select one of the available screen savers.
- Check the checkbox next to "Password protected".
- To the right side of the "Password protected" checkbox, there is a box labeled "Wait". This indicates how long since your last activity it will take for the screen saver to start. Set this value to a number between 5 and 15 minutes. The dialog box should now look similar to:
- Click "OK" to save your settings and exit the dialog box.
- After your screen saver password turns on if you press a key on your keyboard or move your mouse you will get a dialog box telling you that you must press the CTRL, ALT, and DEL keys simultaneously and enter your password. You will need to use your password you logged onto your system with to turn the screen saver off.
